August 2011 - A Conjuring Revival

Hello Counts!

I hope you have been keeping yourself cool this summer. It's been HOT and so has the magic! Conventions! Lectures! Shows! So much to do, so little time.

This month's meeting will focus on Card Basics. That's right! You may already know how to do a double lift or a false shuffle BUT have you ever really looked at the how, when, and why of the basic sleights that we as magicians do everyday?

We will go back and take a look at various basic sleights, how they are done and how they should be done, when you should do them. So grab your pack of cards (no trick cards here) and bring them to the meeting as we explore The Card Basics You Never Knew.

Thanks,

TEO (Chief Conjuring Officer)

NOTE: Young magicians are expected to become IBM Youth Members before coming to their third meeting. Annual Membership fees are as low at $15. $35 with a subscription to the Linking Ring magazine. Joining Ring 50 is also required and annual fees are only $15.

What a Way to Start the New Year!

Hello Fellow Magicians,

It was so good to see all of our regular members at the January meeting! It was also very good to see some new ones!

Announcements:

We announced the upcoming Kapital Kidvention - the first and only DC area convention for children performers.

We are all looking forward to Magi-Whirl in April 2010.

Taolu Exercise:

We reviewed and practiced what we learned so far. Then the members learned how to perform the classic sponge ball routine - The Ten Count.

Taking It To The Street:

We demonstrated and taught our members a cool impromptu coin prediction routine.

Dec. 2nd Meeting Summary

Hello Fellow Magicians,

The December meeting was really exciting!

Announcements:

We announced a new Monthly and Annual drawing for members of the Counts of Conjuring.

Monthly Drawing: Each month, at the end of our meetings, we will have a drawing. We will pick names from among the attending (and participating) members that night. One prize will be given away. The prize may be a magic effect, book, or video.

Annual Drawing: Each member's name will be entered into an annual drawing that will be held at the beginning of each year. Each time you attend a meeting your name will be entered into the annual drawing. That means if you attend all 11 meetings (no meeting in July - I think) then you will have 11 entries in the January drawing. The prize for the annual drawing is unknown right now BUT it will be worth more than the value of the monthly prizes. So this January 2010 will be our first annual drawing. Those who are present for the Dec. meeting and Jan. meeting will have two entries in the annual drawing.

Taolu Exercise:

We reviewed and practiced what we learned so far. Then the members learned how to perform the OK vanish. Lastly they were shown the classic sponge ball routine - The Ten Count.

Show Us What You Got:

Several of our member demonstrated their skill by "Showing What They Got"!

Nov. 4th Meeting Summary

Hello Fellow Magicians,

Yesterday evening's meeting rocked! Our young magicians rocked! The entire night ... rocked!

Announcements:

The new president of the Counts of Conjuring, Theo 'EddieRush' Rushin, was announced.

The new web site for the Counts of Conjuring was revealed (this site).

A new (restricted) Google Group forum was announced - http://groups.google.com/group/countsofconjurin. If you are a member of the IBM Ring 50 youth group (also known as the Counts of Conjuring) and did not submit your email address last night, please send an email to eddierush [AT] gmail [DOT] com and request your Google Group invitation.

Upcoming local lectures and conventions were announced (as seen in the right sidebar on this site).

Taolu Exercise:

One phase of my version of the Benson Bowl routine was demonstrated and practiced. Each member was given a wand, a bowl, and two sponge balls (theirs to keep). We broke the routine up into smaller segments and practiced each segment slowly and deliberately. We all practiced each piece in unison as music played in the background (Song: Contact, Artist: Nelix). They all did so well.

Show Us What You Got:

Louis Meyer, President of IBM Ring 50, presented two effects for our group. He first performed an effect called Hynobook where the words in a book became more and more confusing as several spectators selected and read pages from the book at random. His second effect was a startling card revelation using a "Deal or No Deal" theme. He got strong reactions from the members during both effects.

November 2009 Meeting

Don't forget that the Youth Ring will meet November 4th at 6pm at the Holiday Inn and they will be encouraged to stay for the show.  Again, please members, try to get the word out about our Youth Ring.  We really need to continue to make it grow and need your help.  I challenge you to tell at least one child about the Counts of Conjuring before the next meeting!

C U There!
